Expertise – Competence – Professionalism – Reliability

Founded over 30 years ago by Richard Levallois, the Haras de Semilly equine reproduction center quickly earned an unparalleled reputation.

With over 600 mares monitored annually and some of the highest pregnancy rates, Haras de Semilly has been ranked number one in France for several years.

The entire team is committed to staying at the forefront of new equine reproduction techniques and providing 24/7 services if needed, to give you every possible advantage.

At Haras de Semilly, every service is designed to combine high standards, expertise, and a personal touch.

Whether you are a breeder, owner, or rider, we support you at every stage of your projects with your horses, in a friendly and caring environment.

Insemination

We will give priority to:

  • mares intended for our stallions in the Semilly catalogue,
  • mares undergoing embryo transfer.

Therefore, not all stallions available on the market will be put into service by Haras de Semilly in 2026. Please contact us before any reservation or sending of semen.

Gynecological and ovarian monitoring is carried out daily, or even several times a day if necessary, particularly in the case of embryo transfer, when breeding conditions involve a limited number of doses, or in any other delicate situation. Everything is done to ensure the successful pregnancy of your mare.

Furthermore, the quality results at Haras de Semilly are also impressive. Indeed, SIRE data has allowed us to calculate the percentage of foals declared born following inseminations per center. This is obviously less important than the pregnancy rate at the end of the breeding season, since there is always a significant percentage of mares that miscarry, aborte, or whose foals die shortly after birth before being registered. The Haras de Semilly boasts a rate of over 70% of registered foals born following insemination performed the previous year at this center. This rate is among the best and is all the more remarkable considering the number of mares inseminated and the increasingly complex cases entrusted to us each year!

Embryo transfer

GOOD REASONS TO USE EMBRYO TRANSFER :

  • To allow certain mares to produce offspring when they cannot carry their foals themselves,
  • To avoid putting an older mare or a mare with a long racing career and who has never foaled at risk of pregnancy,
  • To accelerate genetic progress by breeding young mares while continuing to test them in competition, thus allowing for faster assessment of the quality of their offspring.
  • To increase the production of a mare whose quality warrants it.

We ourselves often use embryo transfer and have thus produced, among others: Eloïse de Semilly (World Equestrian Games Jerez 2002) and Kalaska de Semilly (Beijing Olympics 2008) by the excellent, now-aged Normandy Night; Right Now Semilly (Vice-Champion of the 4-year-old CIR at Lion d’Angers 2009) by our mare who competed in CSI, Jaffna de Semilly; Rock’N Roll Semilly (French 4-year-old Champion 2009) from the Oriele de la Mare line; …

At a time when embryo transfer centers are springing up everywhere, the advantages that distinguish the Semilly Stud Farm are:

♦ SKILL

The Semilly Stud Farm has been performing embryo transfers for over twenty years. Pioneers in this field, we have acquired expertise and technical skills that result in the highest success rates in Europe, thus guaranteeing you great efficiency.

♦ SERIOUS

Working in collaboration with an independent organization, we can guarantee the traceability of your embryos.

The surrogate mares are rigorously selected to optimize gestation conditions. We choose healthy, young mares, preferably those that have already foaled once, and of sufficient size and build. They are primarily trotters and saddle mares. They are fed high-quality forage and supplemented judiciously to maximize the success rate of embryo transfers. Once confirmed pregnant at more than 21 days of gestation, the surrogate mares are turned out to pasture in rich Normandy grazing lands to promote embryo implantation and healthy development until they leave the mare’s care at more than 45 days of gestation.

We manage a group of 250 surrogate mares, which increases the chances of successful transfers by providing a wide range of cycled mares compared to donor mares.

♦ FLEXIBILITY

We offer our clients a wide range of procedures depending on the constraints they may have with their mares:

  • Some of the surrogate mothers are kept under heat lamps during the winter to allow breeders to start early in the season (as early as January for the first cycled donors). We also allow breeders to continue quite late in the season if they wish to perform an embryo transfer after the competition season (sometimes until November).
  • Inseminations can be carried out at the Semilly Stud Farm or at another center.
  • Collections can take place at the Haras de Semilly or in another center by our transfer team or by a third party who sends us the collected embryos.
  • The carriers can be loaned or sold.

♦ GUARANTEE

We offer a guarantee from 45 days of gestation up to 48 hours after the birth of the foal.

DO YOU WANT TO CARRY OUT YOUR TRANSFERS WITH YOUR CARRYING CAR?

⚠️ We strongly advise breeders against attempting embryo transfers with a single surrogate mare, as this requires extensive monitoring to synchronize the two mares (donor and surrogate). This is costly, burdensome for the donor, and on average, the results are not great. There are always exceptional cases where it works on the first attempt, but on average, there are far more cases where breeders struggle throughout an entire season, manipulate their mares with hormones that ultimately disrupt their natural rhythms, require a significantly higher number of embryo transfers, and end up paying more than if they had simply rented a surrogate mare… and all this often leads to nothing… except two mares that no longer respond to anything and whose heat cycles are of poor quality.

If we have been managing a group of 250 broodmares for over 20 years, it is not for pleasure, and even less so for the cost of maintaining such a large stock of mares. It is because it is the key to success.

This allows us to monitor donor mares during natural heat cycles, without having to manipulate them hormonally. In the long term, this is very important for them because we are seeing more and more mares arriving at our farm in desperation because they have stopped producing. Often, we manage to recover by letting them function more naturally again, but sometimes when the system is too disrupted by multiple hormonal injections, the cases become hopeless!

While renting a surrogate mare does represent a cost for the breeder, at least they know what they’re getting into and only pay if they obtain a confirmed pregnant mare at 45 days of gestation with a Live Foal Guarantee, unlike attempts to synchronize two mares. It also maximizes their chances of achieving a successful embryo transfer under good conditions, and above all, it’s a long-term investment to ensure a reliable supply of embryos for several years (look at the number of transfers we’ve performed with Rock’n Roll’s dam, who never carried a foal herself but gave birth to around fifty foals. If we had given her repeated hormonal injections, she would have produced far fewer!).

Tai di San Patrignano, a filly by Weihaiwej, the blue-eyed World Champion ridden by Franck Sloothak, and Le Tot de Semilly, conceived by embryo transfer by Richard Levallois, foaled in 2001 at Haras de Couvains and enjoying the rich Normandy pastures with her surrogate mother shortly before leaving to join her owners in San Patrignano, Italy.

Boarding

Le Haras de Semilly covers more than 250 hectares of quality Norman pastures. Depending on your needs, your mares can be accommodated in spacious boxes and paddocks, or enjoy vast fenced meadows with wooden rails, electric wires and hedges.

Foaling

For over 30 years, approximately 80 mares have foaled annually at Le Haras de Semilly stud farm, in large stalls equipped for their comfort and safety. Monitoring includes 24/7 cameras, red lights to avoid disturbing the mares, as well as “Birth Alarm” straps and magnets for optimal tracking.

The experience, seriousness and professional rigor of our team constitute a guarantee of trust, ensuring safe and serene foaling conditions and offering breeders the peace of mind they expect.

Covering

For over 30 years, the Haras de Semilly has managed a wide range of stallions and enjoys a reputation for seriousness and competence in all aspects of stallion management: semen production and delivery, promotion, communication, management of breeding cards, customer relations…

The stud farm has a breeding room equipped with a dummy for collection and a modern European-approved laboratory, allowing the production of fresh, chilled or frozen semen according to strict quality standards.

For frozen semen doses, we guarantee a minimum of 35% live and motile sperm with a concentration of 400 million per dose. Any dose that does not meet these quality criteria is not marketed.

For some stallions at the Stud Farm, the quality can reach 40%, and for exceptional stallions like Diamant de Semilly, this criterion can exceed 50%, thus guaranteeing fertility rates among the best.

The stud farm offers a wide variety of stallions available in pure, fresh or chilled semen, distributed throughout France and deliverable the day after dispatch (depending on transport availability), thus offering optimal accessibility for your mares in Europe.

Breeding

At Haras de Semilly, each year we breed around thirty foals, the result of rigorous and thoughtful selection. Each cross is studied to combine temperament, athletic qualities and genetic potential, giving birth to balanced, high-performing and promising horses, both for sport and breeding.

Le Haras de Semilly covers 220 hectares of vast Norman pastures, home to broodmares, foals, and adult horses. The site includes a breeding area and a modern, high-end sporting area, offering optimal conditions for the development and well-being of our horses.

Valuation

At Haras de Semilly, we exclusively breed horses born on our farm, as well as certain carefully selected foals acquired for their sporting and genetic potential, such as Hoptum de l’Abbaye or Ekano DKS*Semilly. Each horse receives attentive monitoring from birth to develop its sporting potential and natural qualities.

Our development program supports horses from the SHF Young Horse circuit, then on national and international tracks, with the objective of: preparing certain horses for marketing, while developing our maternal lines to strengthen and enrich our breeding program.

Thanks to modern facilities, a qualified team and personalized support, each horse has the optimal conditions to progress to the highest level and fully express its abilities.
